Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis is now rare, but minor gum infections involving just a few teeth probably occur relatively commonly. The severe form usually affects only people with an impaired immune system (for example, due to human immunodeficiency virus [HIV]/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome [AIDS] or immunosuppressive drugs). Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG) is a severe and painful form of gingivitis characterized by gingival pain, bleeding and necrosis of the interproximal papillae (Schluger,1943). It has been called by many names like Vincent's disease, trench mouth, and fusospirochetal gingivitis. Necrotizing gingivitis is part of a spectrum of disease termed necrotizing periodontal diseases. It is the most minor form of this spectrum, with more advanced stages being termed necrotizing periodontitis, necrotizing stomatitis and the most extreme, cancrum oris. Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG) refers to the clinical onset of NUG. Necrotizing gingival disorders are rare conditions of the gingival tissues.

Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG) is the acute presentation of NUG, which is the usual course the disease takes. Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis is a severe, rapidly developing, gingival infection that initially affects the gingival tissues between the teeth. The interproximal gingiva becomes markedly erythematous and ulcerated.
